Founder / Personal Development Therapist / Change Advisor / Motivational Speaker

Our founder, Samantha Toweel-Moore, is passionate about sports and human advancement.

From a sports perspective she is a runner and a cyclist. She has successfully completed the Comrades Marathon (89ks) and the Amashova (106km) as well as the 94.7km Cycle Challenges.

As far as human advancement goes, Samantha is a Health Professional with Honour’s Degrees in Psychology and Occupational Therapy.

She has undertaken further studies in her special interest areas of trauma and drug recovery.

Samantha grew up with parents who used their skills to contribute to positive change. Her mother an Educator taught her that we must always learn and grow. Change. Before her eyes people coming into her father’s boxing club went from rough and lost to Champions. This instilled an unshakeable belief in her about the resilience of the human spirit. She learnt that no matter how dark and broken our past story or our current state is, we hold the power to choose and create a bright future.

Life throws left hooks, jabs, uppercuts. We have to learn how to bob and weave. Fight back. Learn from the punches and grow our champion within. A Champion doesn’t keep his skills to himself. The Toweel family have shown, they pass it on and grow future Champions.
Her father was still in the ring in his 70’s helping youngsters up. He obtained a Lifetime Contribution Award and raised many future World Champions.

I initially got involved with Growing Champions after Sam sent out an appeal for volunteers to cook meals for the young men that have been rehoused. I am now involved in an administrative role… Where this will lead God only knows.

I was attracted to this particular organisation because of the determination of these young men to change their lives irrespective of the destructive, violent, drug infused environment they live in.

I believe that your circumstances don’t determine who you are, your attitude and belief within those circumstances determine who you are… this is best illustrated by a story about two brothers…

Their father was a bitter and cruel alcoholic who almost killed himself several times. Today he serves a life sentence in prison for murder. His two sons are a mere eleven months apart – one of whom grew up to be just like his father – a drug addict who lived by stealing and threatening others until he too, was put in jail for attempted murder. The other brother however, is a different story, a man who is raising three kids, he has a healthy marriage and appears to be truly happy in his career etc… He is physically fit, and has no alcohol or drug addictions…

How could these two young men have turned out so differently, having grown up in the same environment?

Both were asked privately, unbeknownst to the other…

“Why has your life turned out this way”? – Surprisingly they both provided the exact same answer: “What else could I have become, having grown up with a father like that?”

We believe that events control our lives and that our environment shapes who we are… BUT this is not true:

It is not the events of our lives that shape us, but our beliefs as to what those events mean that shape us…

You see, it is never the environment, it is never the events of our lives, but the meaning we attach to these events – how we interpret them – that shapes who we are today and who we’ll become tomorrow…

It is how we interpret what has influenced our lives positively or negatively that causes us to become either heroes or victims, these beliefs determine whether we will live victorious lives or lead lives of quiet desperation.

The young men who have chosen to be Growing Champions have chosen to believe that the events of their lives do not need to shape them negatively and that is why I am involved in helping these young brave men be everything they dream they can be.

Football Coach

I was born in Eldorado park. I grew up there and have stayed there until the age of 21. I came to a crossroads in my life when I attended a GC Football Session, Coach Sam and Coach Delano changed my life and I have grabbed all the wisdom, help and guidance they have offered me.

I have been a Football Coach at Growing Champions Football Club for 3 years. My duties are not only to teach children how to play the sport well but also to mentor and be a healthy positive example. I have enjoyed 3 years of being part of the Growing Champions Football Club. I coach the U10’s and U13 teams.

I love working with the children and seeing how they grow both mentally and physically. I feel very grateful to be part of the team – Growing Champions.

Gc has done alot of good things for our family and has also kept us together. The reason why our kids should stick with GC is to keep them busy and out of trouble. Growing Champions has done wonders for our kids as it brings them together and keeps them stable. I love to be part of the GC family because GC has given our children a reason to dream and grow. GC has taught me and my children never to give up.

Through Growing Champions I have been able to start my own business and thereby assist GC with fundraising and transport needs. I am a mother to all the GC children in Eldorado Park, I keep a watch over their well being while I work and raise money for this amazing organisation.
Love you all lots. God bless
