Growing Champions Non-Profit Organisation is a youth mentoring programme in the business of changing lives. Our passionate team of professionals volunteer their
services to provide the scaffold for children born into the depth of poverty, criminal rings, addiction, violence and abuse, to rise and free themselves of the shackles of their inheritance.
We provide a 7 step programme which involves education, sport, trauma therapy, personal development and spiritual growth. The Growing Champion chooses an identity of one who progresses and overcomes any opponent he or she faces. They cultivate values and gain tools to become
Change Leaders who help the next person up andcause a ripple effect of change across the nation.
Each Growing Champion initiates a community project to lead change in an area that causes them immense setback such as poverty, hunger, being muted through abuse, the trauma of gender-based violence, lack of access to education, poor habits leading to addiction or social pressure that lead them to take on labels that hinder progress. Their project reflects their personal story of transformation. Each Champion helps the next to build their vision for a healthier community and form a network of skills, labour and prayerful support.
Each Growing Champion becomes an active, purposeful villager in pursuit of their shared vision of a better world.
I was born into a household of champions. Men who pioneered and wrote history. It was a life changing moment for me when my father, Willie Toweel, a world-class boxing champion, was inducted into the Sport’s Hall of Fame.
He was asked, “What was your greatest sporting moment?” He replied without hesitation, “The moment I had a voice to give someone a hand-up in life.” He knew the pain of poverty, prejudice and grief. He knew success was not a title, it was using the title to impact the world for the better. After bowing out of his professional career, my father and his two brothers wrestled with the Minister of Sport to remove apartheid in Sport and gratefully promoted the first multi-racial boxing tournament in the country.
My Dad obtained a Lifetime Contribution Award as he was still in the ring in his 70’s, helping youngsters up after a highly decorated career as a judge, referee and trainer. He raised a world champion and many champions for South Africa, but most of all, he taught me not to be afraid of the blows of life, but, rather to learn to fight like a champion.
Empowering at risk individuals’ transformation through service, to create a community driven to contribute towards a connected and sustainable world of growth.
I am responsible for my own actions and face my consequences.
I look for ways to give of my talents and self. I aim to make the world better.
I choose to build not break and strive for excellence in all I do.
I work for the greater good. Together we rise.
I give thanks for all my blessings.
