Step 1

Join the Growing Champions Club:

The sports field is our family heartbeat. It’s where our champions come together as brothers and sisters fighting for the victory of their shared vision. To live life and live it to the fullest. The place where they put on their kit of hope and determination. They embrace their GCFC badge. The lion’s heart, led by courage; the decision to make sacrifices and carry their cross; to remember they are standing on the shoulders of giants who have gone before them to Champion change.

The pitch is where their ears open to listen as there is a complete sense of purpose and engagement. Skills of team work, discipline, effort and overcoming is brought to life. It is a place of improvement, breaking through limits set by fears, creating first times and going for more.

We participate in many different sports for social engagement and personal growth. Each year Growing Champions participate in The Township Marathon Road Run, to raise funds and awareness for the prevention of Teen Suicide, for children fighting life threatening disease and other social causes. As a team, our youth use their health and fitness to make dreams possible for marginalised and vulnerable people.
Step 2

Safe Residential Facility:

Our youth are born into environments which breed selfdestruction through drug use, violation, criminal ring membership, sexual promiscuity, forced sex, gambling, assault, domestic violence and an ethos of back-stabbing. Shadowed by the belief that death is around the corner. The children grow up celebrating a 21st birthday like a 100th birthday because of its rarity. We worked within the communities and realised that it is impossible to focus on the growth and transformation required to build a life when you are  fighting to survive.

We established the Growing Champions home in 2015. A place to provide belonging and safety. A place to build their lives. In our boys and girls home, the young people sleep without fear. We establish security as a foundation to maturity which underlies purity.

Here, the natural bonds of family begin to develop as they live together and care for each other.

Step 3

A Good School:

Our children have typically experienced school life where, they have been physically whipped by teachers and have no access to textbooks. Some have had drunk teachers report to teach class. We make it our business to scout for affordable well-run schools to provide our children with an education that can move them toward tertiary education. In addition, personal tutoring is provided on a regular basis to bridge the gap of many years of poor schooling and underperformance.

As our children have parents who have dropped out of school and have casual unskilled jobs or are unemployed diverse career options are explored with them. The Sci-Bono Career Centre and private educational psychologists who volunteer their services, help line up their interests, values, purpose and skills with future career possibilities.

Once our children find their passion they engage in our ‘Dream Builders’ workshops. They spend days in relevant spaces where they ‘try on’ the career. We capture their experience visually, photograph it and help them to visualise this. This helps them to start believing it is possible. It encourages them to work towards the previously unobtainable.

We currently have 17 students engaged in tertiary education. Their learnings are ploughed back into the Growing Champions community structure to fertilise growth.
Step 4

Social and Character Development:

Character counts. It’s the trunk of the tree of life. It stabilises the branches which depict the talents and skills our youth develop. These can only bear fruit that can be enjoyed by them and last to be enjoyed by others beyond their lifetime, if they are maintained. No matter how many skills or talents
you have, if you lack integrity you will eventually breakdown what you have built. To help our youth create lasting legacies we root them deeply in community engagement and purposeful project work. Growing Champion’s serve.

They realise they are not victims but victors and contribute to society with energy, respect, gratitude and compassion. As they do this they find the courage to heal their wounds through trauma work and psychoeducational group session. Personal development and mental toughness are engaged in weekly and applied in their educational and sports settings
to internalise and embody.

Volnteers and people that they have come to know through sport, education, spiritual and recreational engagements become their social community. They learn to trust, recipricate and form win-win relationships.

Step 5

Power-up Education:

Education is something no-one can every take away from you. It becomes a part of you and is central to an impactful life. Formal education is a stepping stone we provide for our youth to climb upon with great understanding and enthusiasm.

We currently have 17 students engaged in tertiary education. Their learnings are ploughed back into the Growing Champions community structure to fertilise growth. Each one shares their growing knowledge and is excited to
apply it to assist identified areas of desired progress.

Step 6

Building up Finances:

Our youth have known poverty, have internalised ‘black tax’ and have lived by hussling for their family from ages 8 or 9. Sometimes as the breadwinner. Through crime.

Learning healthy financial management is essential. We teach personal budgeting and healthy life skills, such as how to recognise co-dependence, set healthy boundaries and manage money to become financially self sustainable.

We teach them to prioritise the essentials of self-care; such as medical aid, build investments and consistent saving habits.

Step 7

Influence Positive Change:

Our Champions use their growth, education, skills and  passion for life to give a hand up to others. Each works over the years on discovering what they are drawn to do to leave the world a better place than they found it. They formulate community projects to serve, tutor and mentor other Growing Champions and support the workings of their fellow Champions.

They plant and water seeds of the garden of Hope for the future.
