When I first heard the English expression, ‘A picture speaks a thousand words’, I knew I had found my answer. Growing up, I recognised poverty was a silencer. It seemed to turn down the volume on your voice, making it difficult or impossible to be heard. I witnessed how victims of abuse were muted. I wanted to scream out and shake up the world to notice; to answer the cries of our people lost in the noise of life. Sitting in my Mathematics class with my Growing Champions’ tutor I found my tool. Aunty Gill kindly handed me a camera to begin painting the picture of each story. As I began, Coach Sam added a few words to guide my story and we created photobooks to share them. I have grown in humility and gratitude in seeing how profoundly my work has been supported. Every cent of profit is donated to the upliftment of the beautiful people brave enough to speak up through the lens and give the world a new perspective of truth. A truth that can help us rise, together.
